Healthy Sweet Treat Recipe: Protein Peanut Butter Balls

Hello everyone! Summer is officially here and boy has it been a busy one. I had hip surgery three weeks ago (post soon to follow) and have been busy with getting back into the swing of things.

One important thing to know about Wil and I, is that we love sweet treats. When I say "sweet treats" I'm referring to anything from cookies, to cupcakes, to ice cream, to healthy snacks and more. I  particularly have a sweet tooth and blame this partially on my mother who had homemade baked goods sitting on our stovetop everyday; and still does to this day. I became spoiled with homemade ice cream, homemade scones and every other dessert imaginable- I honestly did not know what a store bought pie crust was until I saw one at a friends' house.

Lucky for me, I married someone that enjoys sweets just as much as I do. Wil and I like finding new recipes and creating healthier versions of traditional treats. That being said, one evening we were craving a sweet that wouldn't do a ton of damage to our healthy eating plan. We did some research and found a recipe for a protein ball. We tweaked the recipe, made it our own and low and behold, the protein packed Peanut Butter Ball was born!

Although this recipe doesn't really match any traditional dessert I can think of, the closest thing I would compare it to would be a "Buckeye" without the chocolate coating.

First off, these little guys are super easy to make and are great for days when you want just a little bit of sweetness. The best part is, there are only four ingredients and they take less than five minutes to make- which is great for those of us on the go.

Ingredients needed are:
1 cup Natural Peanut Butter
1 cup Honey or Agave Nectar
1 cup Flax Seeds
1 cup Protein Powder (Chocolate or Vanilla)
Dark Chocolate chips (not necessary)

There are really only three steps involved in making these. First, mix all of your ingredients together- I start with the wet ingredients and then add in the protein powder and flax seeds.

Once you have mixed it well, line a baking dish (or any other container) with wax paper and roll the mixture into bite sized balls.

Once you are finished making the balls, place them into your freezer or refrigerator until you are ready to eat them. Note: if you put them into the freezer they will not completely freeze- I personally like this consistency best.

Also, if you want a smaller amount, you can half the recipe and use 1/2 cup of each ingredient instead of a full cup- they taste just the same.

Now that I have officially posted my first "recipe", be on the lookout for other concoctions and recipes that Wil and I will create in the near future. Enjoy!

Welcome to Fitness is Delicious

Hi, I'm Ashley!

and this is my blog about food, fitness and all things related (and possibly unrelated). I live in Bloomington, Indiana with my husband Wil- we were recently married in October of 2011.

Wil and I both enjoy cooking, going out to eat and working out- each are a part of our daily lives. We are blessed to live in a town that is full of restaurants, stores and markets that offer locally grown and sustained produce and meat along with other delicious dishes. If you're in the area, make sure to check out the BIRA website before visiting- most of our favorite restaurants are listed!

Meet my husband, Wil!

Wil owns a fitness facility here in town called Force Fitness and PerformanceWil was a collegiate Track and Field athlete at Indiana University and likes to Olympic Lift (he was a national champion). His facility focuses on athlete training, personal training, bootcamps and includes the use of kettlebells, TRX suspension trainers, Olympic Lifting techniques, medicine balls and more. This is where I do my strength training and bootcamp workouts, but I also enjoy hot yoga, running, swimming, cycling and pretty much any other outdoor activity.

I graduated from Hawaii Pacific University in 2007 with a degree in Public Relations and currently work in marketing at a medical device company. I'm also the co-owner of a wedding planning and design business in Bloomington called The Bird & The Bee Wedding Planning and Design.

So, you might be wondering where the name "Fitness is Delicious" came from. I enjoy fitness. I enjoy things that are delicious. Plain and simple, fitness is delicious to me and so is great food.

The goal of my blog is to share. To share fitness, workout and training tips, recipes and food I have tried, products I love (and hate) and other sport and food related subjects.

Some fun facts about me are that I am the oldest of four, I am a three-time National Champion in Cheerleading, I love lululemon although I only own a hoodie, workout bag and a scarf, my favorite activity is running outside, my favorite sweet treat to snack on at work is dark chocolate with sea salt and my favorite place to be is near the beach.

I hope you enjoy reading my blog and please leave a comment- I'd love to hear from you!
